Thankfully, we won’t send the feathery mess to anyone’s door here in the US, but we will make sure that a family across the globe gets the support they need to make their lives a little easier. And chickens are just the beginning- pineapple plants, goats, water pumps, piglets, stoves and more are all available on our Gifts of Hope catalogue.

Mother’s Day is just four days away. What could be a greater gift than knowing you made a profound difference in the lives of others across the world? This is exactly what you can do by honoring a mom this Sunday with a Gift of Hope. Choose gifts ranging from $11 to $260 and we’ll send a mom you admire a card to let her know a life-changing gift was made in her honor in time for Mother’s Day.

By buying a Gift of Hope for Mother’s Day, you are also entered into our drawing for a one-of-a-kind handicraft made by a woman in a country where we work. We’ll announce the winner after Mother’s Day!

Last week saw a historical moment for IN-NYC when it welcomed the Irish President, Michael D. Higgins at the Wall Street headquarters of BNY Mellon. President Higgins delivered a speech engrained with humility, humor and realistic positivity. The inspirational impact in the room was potent and left many feeling a refreshed sense of conviction in their shared affinity with Ireland.

We encourage our members to read his speech and take pride in the significance of their part in contributing to the Irish-US bond. As the President himself noted, “that relationship is never taken for granted. It doesn’t simply happen. It is renewed, refreshed and refined over the years, primarily by people like you . . . “
Thank you to all our members for their integral role in sustaining this invaluable relationship and thank you to President Higgins for the honor of his support. Long may both continue.

Radharc

Contemporary Irish Painting

May 7th – June 29th
Open Monday – Friday 10 AM – 5 PM

Presented by Oliver Sears Gallery, Dublin, Radharc – Contemporary Irish Painting presents the work by 6 painters who currently live and work in the island of Ireland. Representing different genres – landscape, figurative, and abstract – each bring, through their individual painterly skills, sensibilities, and concerns, their own perspective and sense of place. For Hughie O’Donoghue, the stark Irish scenery of north-west Mayo, from where his mother emigrated in 1937, has found expression in his work; Katherine Boucher Beug brings the ‘outsider’ eye of one who was not born in Ireland to her observations; Keith Wilson draws on his immediate surroundings to create images which are highly specific yet universal; Colin Davidson’s recent work focus’ on large-scale portraits but there is still a landscape quality to these paintings; Donald Teskey has explored both the urban landscape and more recently the rugged landscape of the western seabord of Ireland in his work; and Stephen Lawlor, who started off in printmaking before subsequently coming in to painting, has painstakingly harnessed this medium to give us work that is often mythical, sometimes mystical, but always human.

Each of these 6 painters is established, acclaimed and widely exhibited in Ireland, the UK and Europe; however, this show is an opportunity to now present their work to US audiences in the splendid surroundings of the AIHS who, in turn, are proud to showcase, yet again, the best of Irish contemporary visual culture- this time in the form of Ireland’s leading painters. Radharc – Contemporary Irish painting takes place from May 4th to June 29th at the American Irish Historical Society, 991 Fifth Avenue, New York.

Ireland plays an exceptional role in the fight against global hunger, providing leadership and example in both government and non-government sectors to provide sustainable solutions to the food crises that haunt this century. The scale and impact of the Irish contribution to humanitarian action is remarkable for a small nation. This symposium will provide an opportunity to discuss the history of this role and consider its present and future challenges and opportunities, looking beyond immediate governmental partnership to the roles of non-government and civil society actors – from aid organizations, religious groups and educators, to philanthropists – and consider the political and cultural contexts determining Irish/US strategies and collaborations.

Ireland’s effort to emerge from the global financial crisis continues to earn high praise and severe criticism from domestic and international commentators. At home, Ireland is also engaged in a debate on economic and European integration policies as the country approaches the May 31 vote on the European Stability Treaty.

Is Ireland an example of successful economic readjustment to be emulated in Europe? Will being “open for business,” be sufficient to attract global investment? Will uncertainty surrounding economic strains in other (and larger) European economies effectively constrain Ireland’s ability to economically recover? How far is Ireland, a country attracting investment from major US companies, affected by American economic policies?

Glucksman Ireland House of New York University invites you to join a discussion of these timely questions. Keynote address by Wilbur Ross, Chief Executive Office of WL Ross & Co. LLC.

The evening will include commentary by a distinguished panel including Desmond Mac Intyre, Chief Executive Officer of Standish and BNY Mellon Asset Management, and Nicolas Economides, Professor of Economics at the Leonard N. Stern School of Business at New York University and Executive Director, NET Institute. Introduction by Loretta Brennan Glucksman, Chair of the Glucksman Ireland House Advisory Board and of the American Ireland Fund.

BRONTË A Portrait of Charlotte is an award-winning biographical treatment written by William Luce. Based on letters written between Charlotte and her childhood friend and confident, Ellen Nussey, the play sheds light on Charlotte’s fears, her need for love, her sense of loss and quiet suffering. Most importantly it casts light on the genius of the woman. Her fierce independence and remarkable imagination is perfectly relevant today. Written as a radio play for Julie Harris, it eventually became a stage piece which the legendary Miss Harris toured the country performing. This new production of BRONTË is being presented by the AlloyTheater Company, and will open Off-Broadway at Theater 511. Irish-born actress Maxine Linehan takes on the tour de force role.

Thursday, May 10th ∙ 5:30-8pm

at Eisner & Lubin Auditorium
NYU’s Kimmel Center for University Life,
60 Washington Square South, 4th floor

Ireland’s effort to emerge from the global financial crisis continues to earn high praise and severe criticism from domestic and international commentators. At home, Ireland is also engaged in a debate on economic and European integration policies as the country approaches the May 31 vote on the European Stability Treaty.

Is Ireland an example of successful economic readjustment to be emulated in Europe?

Will being “open for business” be sufficient to attract global investment?

In this modern fairytale, three young romanians go to Dublin to find attention, money, and the chance to make art. Their quest takes them into the moral wilderness created by globalization, economic disparity, and the media age. First produced at the Royal Court and the Dublin Theatre Festival, Kebab has also been seen throughout continental Europe.

How it’s New York: In its 10th year, this is NYC’s version of the national observation of all things Scottish – with a cast of thousands…of proud, fun-loving New York Scots.

How it’s [Scottish] Irish: In Scotland, April 6th marks the signing of the Declaration of Arbroath in 1320 at Arbroath Abbey, when Scottish nobles declared Scotland to be an independent nation with the right to live free from rule or oppression by other countries. It also claimed that Scottish independence was the right and responsibility of the Scottish people, not the King – and that the nobles would choose another king if they had to.

This document was used as a basis for the American Declaration of Independence.

Tartan Day in Scotland was inspired by this historical occasion to celebrate all that is good about Scotland - its people, its heritage, its history, its culture, and its amazing legacy.

Sue Sylvester attends the pre-parade ceilidh at the New York Caledonian Club and finds herself in awe of Scottish people!

After an entire week of amazing events and activities (including a kilted 10k run!), local Tartan Week celebrating wound up NY-style: with a parade up the Avenue of the Americas. But never let it be said that an occasion in NYC was ever that simple: there was the pre-parade dance, a special ceremony in a church beginning with bagpipes and ending with brunch, and lots and LOTS of post-parade parties, proudly hosted by NYC’s two largest Scottish societies, the New York Caledonian Club and the St. Andrew’s Society of the State of New York.

Right at the top, I have to say that I am never more in awe of the Scottish people as when they’re happily partying. Not only are they endlessly hospitable and fun (They’ve always shown this woman a good time!) but, after they’ve been drinking, eating, and dancing half the night, they can get up the next morning and march all over the City playing bagpipes! The only word I can think of for this phenomenon is: stamina.

Michelle Woods reviews Honor Molloy’s Smarty Girl, about a 1960s Dublin childhood, and finds the language intoxicating– and

intoxicatingly dangerous. “The fancy tomorrows are all there is, and they only seem to exist in words.”

Reading Honor Molloy’s Smarty Girlis like taking a bath in language. Little Noleen O’Feeney’s world is threaded into existence by her parents’ words, throwing a scrim of delight over the reality of a poor, 1960s Bohemian Dublin existence. The beauty of the language, of the dialogue – seeing the worlds being created – is intoxicating. We’re drawn into Noleen’s delight, until we, like her, realize that those words, that scrim, can be the death of you.

Smarty Girlis based roughly on Molloy’s own background. Her da, famous actor, boozer and womanizer extraordinaire, and her American mother met at Trinity, where her mother, way ahead of her time, was doing PhD on Synge. She wrote radio plays and TV sketches with her husband, while having a constant stream of kids. They were collectors of Dublin vernacularisms. Remarkable though the real story is, what interests Molloy as a novelist – rather than a memoirist – is what interested her parents: language. And what it does.

Van Morrison didn’t sing the beautiful Irish folk song, “Carrickfergus” at Tuesday night’s salon but Malachy McCourt ended an absolutely grand evening with a heartfelt rendition of this tune. The origins of “Carrickfergus” are unclear, but it has been traced to an Irish language song, “There Was a Noblewoman,” written in the early eighteenth century. On Tuesday April 3, the Irish language was at the heart of one of the most stirring presentations the members of the Irish American Writers & Artists have experienced since the salons began. Reading from her play, Killer is My Name, Guenevere Donohue’s audience sat spellbound as she weaved storytelling, keening–a form of vocal lament–and the Irish language into performance art of the highest order.

Holleran told me that despite it being his first solo concert, Begley beguiled the audience with stories, jokes, poetry (yes, he read poetry) and conversation, and turned what might simply have been a couple of tunes in front of a few folks into an engrossing stream-of-consciousness musical experience that no one would soon forget. People came for the music, but they stayed for the Begley.

How It’s (Tri-State) New York: This production is from the Pearl Theatre Company, one of New York’s Off-Broadway greats, with its own company. And Eugene O’Neill lived in Connecticut.

How It’s Irish: Oh so many ways. O’Neill was Irish-American, and his Irishness comes through so clearly here: it’s all there, the land anxiety; jokes about the church; longing for mother; sex as sin; love as redemption; drink as life and death at once- and the inability to excape the past.

And the Hogans in A Moon for the Misbegotten are overtly Irish, with Irish accents even.

A Moon for the Misbegotten begins as a drinking song and ends as a melancholy ballad.

A version of this review first appeared in Irish Examiner USA.

For two acts, Eugene O’Neill’s A Moon for the Misbegotten, especially in this production by the Pearl Theatre, which runs through April 15, is a rollicking peasant comedy like one of Synge’s – albeit set in Connecticut.

A father and daughter with strong Irish accents banter and tease and make fun of the English; a bet is made about tricking a landlord into marriage.
You’d be forgiven for thinking you know where the play is going.
You’d be wrong.

The final two acts (there are four; two intermissions in the Pearl’s production) are where the play leaps into Modernism and becomes something else entirely.
Yes, there is love (as the title seems to promise), but it’s not the love you expect: she stands in for the mother whose death he still mourns, while he cries. You’ve left the play-as-drinking-song behind and gone right into play-as-sentimental-ballad or even play-as-slow-air.

A version of this article appeared in this week’s Irish Examiner USA! Just when St. Patrick’s day is over, and the March season begins to draw to a close, the Scottish season begins: Scotland week, or Tartan week, culminates in the Tartan Day Parade on April 14, with Grand Marshall Brian Cox. All kinds of Scottish events will be going on, including Whiskey Live! Single malt tastings on April 11, Scottish plays at 59e59, an evening with the Scottish band Scocha at St. Andrews Restaurant on April 12, and much more (events are listed at www.tartanweek.com) . One of the most exciting events kicking off the celebrations, is an exhibit from the The Leabhar Mor/ Great Book of Gaelic at Ellis Island Immigration Museum through April 8.

This remarkable anthology has been touring the world since its debut in 2002—what we have here is not the book itself but some of its artwork, with readings and performances on April 3 and April 5 (details below). And at the exhibition on Ellis Island this weekend there will be storytellers, jugglers, clarsach players, pipes and drums!

The book consists of 100 Gaelic poems chosen by 50 of the most noted poets in Ireland and Scotland, with artistic responses by 100 artists, and beautiful calligraphy as well. The poems represent work from the 6th century to the present, and the exhibition traces the Celts from their origins in Central Europe through the Greater Gaidhealtachd of Scotland and Ireland right through to the migrations to the Americas. Ellis Island, of course, is the spot where so many immigrants came through before they reached their new home. The exhibition is progressed by the Gaelic Arts Agency, Proiseact Nan Ealan (PNE), in partnership with the Clan Currie Society. One thing the book demonstrates, says Malcolm McLean, Director of the Gaelic Arts Agency, is that the ties between the Scots and the Irish run very deep. “The truth is,” he told us by phone from his home in Lewis,

“Gaelic is the same language regardless of where it’s spoken in Ireland or Scotland. There are only 650 words of a difference bet Irish Gaelic and Scottish Gaelic.”

The films presented well lived up to name of the festival: ‘craic’ which is Irish (‘Gaelic’) slang for ‘fun’. Put another way, “The craic was ninety,” as they say, on March 9.

All six films were delightful in their own way. Two longer films, with very familiar lead actors, served as bookmarks for the other four.

We learn that this is largely because his closest friend married his former fiancee, an unresolved issue. The resolution invovles a hilarious scene where he and his videotaping daughter are mistaken as spies from the unemployment office investigating the old friend. The moonlighting pal runs for it. The scene almost descends to Waking Ned Divine kitsch, but rights itself just at the end.
