Hi everyone

First, after the tragic events in Boston, we would like to extend our deepest condolences to all those affected, their loved ones, and families. No words can ever fully express our sympathies.

1.

Our next newsletter will focus on the arrival of Summer J-1 visa holders to our shores. We will be listing upcoming business, social and cultural events of our affiliated and other organizations in May and June. By attending these events, J-1’ers can immediately link in with the Irish American community in New York, and increase their chances of finding a job asap. The Irish American community and our affiliated organizations in particular have provided tremendous support in the past, and many J-1 visa holders have found jobs or at least job referrals using the Failte 32 model.

2.

As important as it is to attend these business and social events, please also keep in mind that getting involved in voluntary work upon arrival is a great way to jump right into the American experience, and meet people united for a common cause. It’s also a great way to get job referrals!

a.

The Aisling Irish Community Center (www.aislingcenter.org) presents the inaugural Pauline Boylan-Coll Memorial 5K Walk/Run on Sunday May 19th at 10 am. This is a great opportunity to support a very worthy cause, and get to meet members of the Irish and Irish American community in New York. If you’re coming over on a Summer J-1, Failte 32 would highly recommend that you volunteer to help out at this event.

b.

Don’t forget, the 25th annual Walk for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society on Sunday, April 28, if you have already arrived in New York on the Summer J-1. See attached.

They are able to accommodate 10 to 15 volunteers for the volunteer teams below.

·         The T-shirt distribution team is from 6:00 AM  to 12:00 PM  OR another shift from  11:30 AM to 2:30 PM.

·         Food& Beverage Team is from 6:00 AM to 12:00  PM There is a later shift available from 11:30 AM. to 2 AM however this would be for a maximum of 5 volunteers total.

·         Rest Stop Team is 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

·         Each team does have some seated positions available.

3.

Failte32 is now listed as a partner on halocard (www.halocardproject.com), which means more visibility for our affiliated organizations. It’s Time to Create Your Organization’s HaloCard™ Profile. For details on how to do this, please see below.

Please see recent inquiry from NAME DELETED. We always ask the community to try to help our newest arrivals from Ireland, and those considering a move to the U.S., in their search for employment. As always, we thank you for all your kind support. Attached is NAME DELETED resume, but posted below is an extract from it as we were very impressed with his academic achievements and awards. NAME DELETED represents the tremendous talent coming out of Ireland that is very fortunately available to U.S. employers.

There is no doubt that we need more women in leadership roles in business, politics etc. Below is a very interesting community initiative, the Women’s Advancement Compact (WAC), that is being spearheaded by a young talented and successful business woman in New York, Deborah Goldstein. Further details below:
Thanks so much for showing interest in learning about the Women’s Advancement Compact.
There has not been a time in recent history when so much press has been devoted to women and careers and ‘work life balance’, and women having it all or not having it all.
The Womens’ Advancement Compact (WAC) is a community comprised of educational specialists, a Board of Advisors, strategic partners and New York City based corporate professionals sharing the common goal of professional career advancement, while integrating family life, and personal development.
The WAC realizes that no one has it all; we all need to make choices. Our mission is to support and provide tools to enable NYC corporate professional to have more and work toward their vision of “having it all” whatever that might look like.
Don’t let the name fool you; participation of both men and women is essential to the advancement of women. Men will learn how the advancement of women will ultimately enhance company profits, and how conversations and actions at home will result in the next generation’s success in the workplace and domestically. It’s important that men are part of this evolution.
The WAC comes at a great time; when companies are looking for ways to attract, retain, and advance women, the WAC brings a ‘one stop shop’ to address all angles of career, family and self development.
The Kick-Off Event: On May 9, 2013 will serve to introduce the concept of the WAC community as well as our specialists and strategic partners to a group of people who understand the value of women’s advancement and the benefit of a strong professional support system.
Come hear what we’re all about! You will be inspired and will walk out with much food for thought. Here’s a link to the kick off invite. I hope to see you there.
cheers~
deborah

SENATE IMMIGRATION BILL:

On Tuesday, the group of senators known as the “Gang of Eight” introduced S. 744, the “Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act.”  Failte32 with Caro Kinsella will analyze the text of the bill and provide our readers with further updates.

Here are a few issues from S. 744 to note:

Legalization:

Permits noncitizens that are unlawfully present and who entered the U.S. before December 31, 2011 to adjust status (file for their green card) to that of Registered Provisional Immigrant (RPI). Eligible applicants would be required to pay a penalty and back taxes. Individuals in RPI status would receive work authorization and may travel abroad. They would also become eligible to apply for LPR status after 10 years, and can apply for naturalization 3 years after acquiring a green card.

H-1Bs:

Increase the quota to a floor of 110,000 and a ceiling of 180,000.  Provide work authorization for spouses (H-4) as currently not permitted to work.  Add a 60-day grace period after an H-1B has been terminated from his or her job.

Fraud:

Make it a crime to knowingly defraud an immigrant or hold oneself out as an attorney when one is not authorized to do so. Require the identification of individuals who assist immigrants with the completion of forms and empower the Attorney General with injunctive authority to act against an unscrupulous “immigration service provider” at the federal level.

Sincerely,
Caro Kinsella Attorney & Counselor at Law

This is your opportunity to support and give back to your center and your community! Please encourage your friends to take part with you. Every dollar helps to keep the Aisling Center and the Irish Volunteers for the Homeless on its feet, so sign up today and put your own feet into gear for a very worthy cause!
